Seventy years ago, Ernst Fontell had an idea…

He was chief of police in Göteborg and had observed that there was a trend in society towards a greater threat to the security of the public. The number of thefts and burglaries was increasing, and people were seeking advice about how to protect themselves against crime.

Ernst Fontell discussed this with the insurance companies, who were also very interested in preventing crime and damage. They agreed to start an advice service, and 1934 saw the establishment of Polistekniska Rådfrågningsbyrån at Rådhusgatan 9 in Göteborg.

Eventually advice bureaus were opened in Stockholm, Malmö and Norrköping, and the operation became more and more extensive. When the Stockholm bureau started testing locks and other security products, the bureau assumed the name Stöldskyddsföreningens Provningscenter (The SSF Testing Centre). After some time, the entire nationwide operation was organised under the name Svenska Stöldskyddsföreningen, SSF.

Over the years, society’s needs and wishes have prompted us to develop many more activities. Examples include our training and consultancy work, publishing service, several registers for the identification of theft-prone items, publication of the specialist journal S.O.S Skydd och Säkerhet, and the certification of products, quality systems and personal.

Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, our commitment to Ernst Fontell’s idea is as keen as ever. The need for crime prevention work is greater than Ernst could ever have imagined, and we are constantly seeking new ways towards a more secure society. When the security of an individual person is threatened, we who have common goals and interests must focus our efforts on the task, whoever eventually does the job.
